Restriction(s): Certificate in General Studies students only. This course is for students in their first semester of college. Students will set goals and make plans to learn, work, and enjoy campus life. This seminar is a place to talk about experiences, share ideas, and get help to make the most out of college. Students will do a project to describe their personal goals and plans for working toward them, make learning contracts to communicate how they will learn in their courses, and investigate many other topics about self and others that are important to navigating campus life. Some topics include communication, identity, relationships, healthy living, study strategies, and self-advocacy. Topics can change based on student interests and needs.
Prerequisite(s): CGST 150. Restriction(s): Certificate in General Studies students only. This course is for students to take after completing CGST 150. Students set goals and make plans to learn, work, and enjoy campus life. This seminar is a place to talk about experiences, share ideas, and get help to make the most out of college. The focus is on preparing for a career and deepening understanding of the concentration area. Students will work on making a resume and portfolio that shows what they are gaining from their studies at college. Other topics in this course will change each semester according to student interests and needs. Activities may include participatory or other research experiences, service-learning, and other projects. May be repeated for a maximum of 24 credits.
Prerequisite(s): Department approval. Students will work in partnerships to learn through experience by engaging in extracurricular opportunities offered on the Montclair State University campus. Students will collaborate to plan and participate in academic, social, service-oriented, and/or recreational activities. May be repeated for a maximum of 24 credits.
Prerequisite(s): CGST 175 and department approval. Restriction(s): Certificate in General Studies students only. Students will complete an internship, externship, or other work experience plus seminar for this course. Students must submit an application and have an interview before registering for this course. Some work experience sites might require more than one interview and application. The work experience will relate to the academic concentration, an area of interest, or career goals that the student describes. Students will have an on-site supervisor and may also have a coach or mentor to make the most of learning from experience. May be repeated for a maximum of 12 credits.
