CRW 120  Introduction to Creative Writing  (3 credits)

This course introduces students to the craft of creative writing. Various creative genres (poetry, fiction, and drama) will be introduced. Students will create works to be included in a final chapbook/portfolio. In doing so, they will find or refine their writer’s voice. Students will share their work in writing workshops that will provide opportunities to practice providing and receiving constructive criticism. Satisfies SEEDS Creative Expression student learning outcome in alignment with Self-Discovery and Self-Care value.

CRW 206  Screenwriting  (3 credits)

Prerequisite(s): WRT 105 or WRT 106 with a final grade of C- or better. The focus is on writing a feature-length film and the basic elements of plot, protagonist, turning point, and resolution. You will be expected to complete a step outline of your story and the first act of your screenplay. Mutually Exclusive with CAT 206.

CRW 215  Playwriting  (3 credits)

Prerequisite(s): CRW 120 or consent of the instructor; and WRT 108 or WRT 109 with a minimum grade of C- or higher. A seminar in the art and craft of playwriting. Through classroom discussion, selected readings, writing assignments and critical feedback, each student creates a one-act play which is presented to the College community in an informal program of staged readings.

CRW 234  Special Topics in Writing  (3-4 credits)

Prerequisite(s): ENG 107A, WRT 107, WRT 108, or WRT 109. Special focus in the study of writing, such as children's literature, sports writing, travel writing and memoir. Can be repeated for credit.

CRW 271  Intermediate Poetry Writing  (3-4 credits)

Prerequisite(s): ENG 120 or CRW 120. Through the study and practice of reading and writing poetry, students will analyze the works of published poets and apply established poetic techniques to their won writings. In instructor-led workshops, students will give as well as take constructive criticism, in order to generate a revised portfolio of their own poems. Formerly ENG 271.

CRW 325  The Literary Magazine  (3-4 credits)

Prerequisite(s): CRW 120 and a 200-level literature course with a grade of C or better; or the consent of the Instructor. A project-centered course in which students learn the editorial, proofreading, and production skills necessary to produce a professional literary magazine. Includes discussion of the role of the literary magazine in contemporary writing and in the history of American letters. Culminates in the production of Blink, Bloomfield College's literary magazine. The course can be repeated once for credit.

CRW 460  Senior Thesis in Creative Writing  (3 credits)

Prerequisite(s): ENG 309 or ENG 341; and WRT 107, WRT 108, or WRT 109. Preparation of a final undergraduate portfolio of original poetry or fiction. In-depth study of one craft element in a twentieth-century writer's work. Solo reading of original work for the Humanities Division and the College community. Formerly ENG460.
